The Parliament appoints the new Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson more than 2 years after the mandate of the previous one expired

New draft laws on modernising labour law introduce women quotas on company boards, but other draft provisions are controversial

On May 21st, the Parliament (Seimas) approved two draft law initiatives, introducing administrative liability for “public denigration of constitutional moral values and of constitutional fundamentals of the family life, as well as organization of public events contravening public morality” and limiting adoption and foster care possibilities for same-sex couples.
On March 22nd, a group of NGOs working in the field of anti-discrimination addressed the Parliament proposing amendments to the Law on Equal Treatment and a new candidate for the position of Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson.
The court of first instance rules in favour of a victim in case of alleged discrimination on the ground of social status, not sexual orientation

Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson – national equality body – emphasises in its 2010 annual report the negative effects of governmental budget cuts on anti-discrimination activities, causing the closure of governmental bodies and diminishing the total number of complaints.
